song&&analysis :)
The Rise
By: Erin Yabuki
The sound of the ocean
That crashes on the sand
Relives pain and stress
Like holding your hand
The friends that surround me
Help me to forget
My failing grades and quizzes
or the F's that I get
We laugh, joke and play
Care-free every single day
Mmmmmm
Oh I know I cannot make this on my own
Mmmmmm
Thanks for all the love and strength you've shown
Mmmmmm
All through the days and through the nights
Mmmmmmm
Oh and I know that this is right.
Inside jokes are what make my day
No worries is all I have to say
Help me forget that I was blue
Bursting, laughing, smiling too
We laugh, joke and play
Care-free every single day
Mmmmmm
Oh I know I cannot make this on my own
Mmmmmm
Thanks for all the love and strength you've shown
Mmmmmm
All through the days and through the nights
Mmmmmmm
Oh and I know that this is right.
So believe me when I say
I'm thankful that you're here to stay.
Analysis
At the beginning of this assignment, I had no idea what I wanted to write about. I was thinking about the shopping mall, my cell phone but I thought that I couldn't write a whole song on those topics. Then I decided to find one of my own songs on my ipod and see what the artists write about. One song called Release by Seeed, talks about releasing from stress and just wanting some sunshine and peace. " Oh god release, stress and pressure make me freeze
Gimme some sunshine and peace
Just a little break please, from that dreadful disease"
Those are the first three lines of the song. I got that idea and I started to think about what makes me stressed out. I only had one answer and that was school. With all the tests, homework, quizzes, I hardly have time to enjoy myself. Not only do we have all those things on a daily basis, I tend to not get the best grades. So every week I'm so stressed out about how I did in school and if my parents are going to yell at me again. Now that I had that idea down, I started to think about what made me less stressed out. My mind immediately started to think about my friends and the beach. Whenever I'm with my friends, we always have a good time. We have so much inside jokes together and we're always joking around no matter what. The beach is one of the main places that we go to. It's so calming and when we're there, school and stress doesn't matter. It's so refreshing to go there and relax.
"The sound of the ocean
That crashes on the sand
Relives pain and stress
Like holding your hand"
In this first stanza I'm talking about the ocean and how it's a place to escape. The calming waters and the warm sun gives off a pleasant aurora of peacefulness.
"The friends that surround me
Help me to forget
My failing grades and quizzes
or the F's that I get"
In this, stanza I'm talking about my friends and how they help me through hard times and to forget school.
"We laugh, joke and play
Care-free every single daayyyyy
Mmmmmm
Oh I know I cannot make this on my own
Mmmmmm
Thanks for all the love and strength you've shown
Mmmmmm
All through the days and through the nights
Mmmmmmm
Oh and I know that this is right."
In my chorus, I'm talking about how I depend on them a lot. Without them, I would be a walking time bomb about to explode. They never gave up on me and whenever I was feeling down, they were right there. 24/7 no matter what.
"Inside jokes are what make my day
No worries is all I have to say
Help me forget that I was blue
Bursting, laughing, smiling too"
My friends and I have so many inside jokes. They are so funny and we never have a serious moment. We're always teasing each other and laughing.
" So believe me when I say
I'm thankful that you're here to stay."
In these two last lines, I'm thanking my friends for being there for me. I never really got the chance to, so I thought that this would be the perfect closing lines.
In conclusion, I think that this song is very fun to sing and it has a happy tune. It talks about my life and how I cope with stress. My friends are a very big part of my life and the beach is one of the places where I can go to calm down.
I'm so glad that I wrote about this topic because I can write so passionately about it. ¬

final draft of sonnet/analysis
Erin Yabuki
Summer Storm
My brother's baseball game was so boring
Baseballs flying here and there, everywhere
Then I saw you; I just sat adoring
I began to dust the sand off my hair
Summer time it was, the bright sun glowing
Birds chirping in song, always at the beach
On Myspace, the message link was showing
And there you were, exactly in my reach
Together we were, closer than can be
From summer, past fall and then winter came
The snowstorm got so bad you could not see
Things started to change you were not the same
Now it is spring, the flowers start to bloom
The coldness has gone out appeared the sun
We really needed our own space and room
Now our phone talks are always so much fun
But now isn't the right time can't you see
Things are just too hectic please wait for me
Analysis
Shakespeare's sonnets are usually about love or about a significant someone so I thought this was the perfect topic. My sonnet is about this guy that I saw at my brother's baseball game in the summer. We started talking on the phone and then that lead to a relationship. But in the winter things got kind of rough and it didn't work out. But now we started to talk on the phone again but things are different. There are obstacles in my life that I need to get over before anything starts again. I have so many issues that I need to take care of first.
I tried to incorporate the seasons with my sonnet. I thought that the summer was sunny and bright and winter was cold and dark. In the summer, everything was perfect. No worries, beach all day with friends and then when I met him, he was the magic to my fairytale. Even though he went to a different school, we still found time for each other on weekends. When winter came, school was getting more difficult and I couldn't keep up and his grades were also falling. So I lost all connection with him till just recently.
I was hoping that this sonnet could show my relationship with him in comparison to the seasons. I tried to portray my whole story in a few words. But I don't think that there is anything left to explain.

Analysis
I decided to write about this topic because I couldn't think of anything else to write about. Shakespeare's sonnets are usually about love or about a significant someone so I thought this was the perfect topic.

But in the winter things got kind of rough and it didn't work out. But now we started to talk on the phone again but things are different. There are obstacles in both my life and his life that we need to get over before anything starts again.
I tried to incorporate the seasons with my sonnet. I thought that the summer was sunny and bright and winter was cold and dark. My relationship with him went from summer to winter.

Change
I worry for you
School's as easy as tying your shoe.
Why must you fail almost every class?
Can you at least pass?
As soon as you came back that one night
Seeing you again was a magnificent sight
But I knew they had kicked you out
I missed you, no doubt
There was so much to tell you
Different things that I have been through
Like the movie D.B is in
That's how I told you how things have been
The museum, do you recall?
Why like the museum when right down the street was a mall?
The Eskimos, the elephants, and things that are strange
You said that it was because museums never change.
Everyone's growing up, can't you see?
Even though you disagree
It's time to take some responsibility for your actions
So you can live with everyday satisfactions
Please don't hold me back
Youth is something I want to lack
Change is good can't you see
I think it's time you let your soul free
Analysis:
I wrote this poem pretending to be Phoebe writing to Holden. I imagined that she was trying to help him because they are so close. I think that Phoebe is his one tie to reality. She's in touch with what's real. She is willingly growing up, despite the fact that Holden is trying to hold her back.
For the first verse, Phoebe knows that Holden is failing. She knows that he has flunked out of four schools, and she is worried about him. She wants him to succeed.
"You did get kicked out! You did!" Old Phoebe said. Then she hit me on the leg with her fist. She gets very fisty when she feels like it. "You did, oh Holden!"
…"You did! You did!" she said. Then she smacked again with her fist. If you don't think that hurts, you're crazy. "Daddy'll kill you!" she said. Then she flopped on her stomach on the bed and put the goddam pillow over her head. (pg.165)
You can see how emotional she gets when she finds out that Holden got kicked out again. Not only is she worried about him; it also makes her sad that he's not doing well.
Then I wanted to write about the museum and how he likes it because things never change.
"The best thing though in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody'd moved. You could go there a hundred thousand times, and that Eskimo would still be there just catching those two fish, the birds would still be on their way south, the deers would still be drinking out of that water hole, with their pretty antlers, and their pretty, skinny legs, and that squaw with the naked bosom would still be weaving that same blanket. Nobody'd be different. (Pg. 121)
So as you can see, Holden really liked the fact that the museum never changed. I thought that was so interesting so I wanted to incorporate that into the poem.
